Thomas Conway Observatory Open House
On Saturday, March 3, 2012, the Calumet Astronomical Society (CAS) will hold an open house at the Thomas Conway Observatory in Lowell, Indiana. This event, "A Close Encounter of the Mars Kind" will be held from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm. On March 3rd, Mars will be at opposition, i.e. the Earth is positioned directly between Mars and the Sun. It is at this time that Mars will be at its closest approach to the earth, only 62.6 million miles away. Members of the Society will have their telescopes and binoculars set up for visitors to take an "up close and personal" look at our Red Planet and other celestial objects. Visitors will also get an opportunity to take a peek through the observatory's 16 inch telescope. As with all CAS events, this open house is free and open to the public.
