Transit of Venus At Griffith Observatory, June 5, 2012

The Administration at Griffith Obs. is requesting that all LAAS members who would like to participate in the Transit of Venus add their names to a list which will give you entrance to staff parking and allow you to use your telescopes for the event. Please include a list of all equipment that will be used so Griffith will know how many telescopes they have to setup and where. Send this information to Mary today at nwwrgz@yahoo.com. You can call and leave a message for Mary at 626-791-2740.

Your name MUST be on this list. Special name badges will be made for each volunteer on that list just as they did for the annular eclipse event. These badges must be displayed visibly while you are on the property at all times.

This list WILL be turned in by tomorrow, Friday, June 1, 2012.

Mike White is collecting RSVPs from Night Sky Network. If you are on that list, make sure that you send Mary a note about your equipment.

I have saved a list from Yahoo groups with the following names and equipment. If your telescope info is not included, please send the info to Mary.

1. Drouet, Tom - Coronado MaxScope 90

2. Nakamoto, Dave - 5-inch Mak telescope with German equatorial mount, and laptop.

3. Van Webster and Stefan Webster - 6" reflector on a GEM with a full aperture glass solar filter.

Thanks to those of you who signed up early!

Information for Visitors:

What is a transit of Venus?

When Venus passes directly between earth and the sun, we see the distant planet as a small dot gliding slowly across the face of the sun. Historically, this rare alignment is how we measured the size of our solar system.

When is it?

The next transit of Venus occurs June 5 or 6, 2012, depending on your location. Observers in North America see it the evening of June 5. This will be the last transit of Venus to occur in your lifetime.
