Telecon with Dr. Steve Stahler on The Birth of Star Clusters

On Thursday, May 28th 6:00 pm Pacific Time Dr. Steven Stahler gave us a thought provoking talk featuring our June 2009 IYA Discovery Guide theme:
Clusters of Stars.
Our speaker, an astrophysicist at the University of California, Berkeley, spoke about the unifying theory of star formation as it pertains to Globular Clusters and Stellar Groups; some of which we're all familiar with including the Pleiades.
Dr. Stahler recently coauthored the first comprehensive textbook in the field ("The Formation of Stars," Stahler & Palla, Wiley-VCH, 2004). Trained as a theoretical physicist, Steven especially delights in the aesthetic aspect of his research, which he conveyed to us.

Save June 18th for our next teleconference with Dr. Eliot Quataert featuring our July 2009 IYA Discovery Guide theme:
Black Holes.
A weekend of Hands-on Astronomy and Earth-Science Education Workshops for amateur astronomers as well as 4th -12th Grade teachers will be presented by the Astronomical Society of the Pacific at the Westin Hotel near the San Francisco Airport in Millbrae, California, on September 12 - 13, 2009.
Thanks to conference supporters, registration for each day or the workshop will be only $39.95.
Sunday afternoon will feature a special non-technical lecture series about the search for life among the stars, with some of the leading scientists from the SETI Institute describing the scientific experiments now under way to identify life beyond Earth.
Thanks to the support of the Spitzer Space Telescope Science Center, a limited number of travel-support scholarships (of up to $300 per person) will be made available.
