S*T*A*R Astronomy Society
About Us
S*T*A*R Astronomy Club has evolved from it's early formation to bring together amateur astonomers with a wide variety of interests including; visual observing, imaging and telescope making. Our primary mission is public outreach and bringing the wonders of the night skies to the attention of both young and old alike. We welcome new members and you don't need a telescope to join !!
We meet the first Thursday of every month, from September through June at the Monmouth Museum in Lincroft, NJ. Our meetings start at 8 PM, although we encourage first time attendees to come at 7:30 PM, so that we can meet them prior to the start of the meeting. We've enjoyed speakers from the amateur ranks, as well as distinguished scientists, like Nobel Laureate Dr. Robert Wilson (co-discoverer of the Cosmic Microwave Background -CMB). We're happy to help arrange a Star Party for your school or group. We also meet monthly for observing at nearby Dorbrook Park..
The Society for Telescopy, Astronomy and Radio (S*T*A*R) was formed in 1957, as part of the citizen-science movement. The first meetings were held on the property of Ft. Monmouth in Eatontown, NJ, then the US Army's Communication Command. The initial mission of the group was to collect observations on man-made satellites, so that accurate orbits could be calculated.
