Back Bay Amateur Astronomers
About Us
The Back Bay Amateur Astronomers (BBAA) is a group of amateur astronomers drawn together by a common interest in astronomy. The society was founded December 14, 1978 by members dedicated to promoting amateur astronomy. We invite you to come to our any of our free monthly events to take a look through our telescopes and learn more about the night sky.
The BBAA's motto is "Bringing Astronomy to the People of Hampton Roads", and we participate in many events throughout the year to advance that goal. We hold monthly events for the City of Chesapeake at the Northwest River Park and Elizabeth River Park. On a frequent basis we do events with local schools and at the boardwalk in Virginia Beach and work with local public libraries throughout the Hampton Roads area. We also are invited to several events a year at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens and for an event we call "Garden Stars". You'll often find our members assisting at local planetariums too, where we set up telescopes and interface with the public.
The BBAA is an active member society of the Astronomical League, a part of the NASA's Night Sky Network, and a member of the Virginia Association of Astronomical Societies (VAAS). We are also active on social media. Please visit our social media pages on Facebook Group, Twitter, Facebook page, Instagram, and Groups.io to stay up to date with our club's latest activities.
