About Us
Los Angeles Astronomical Society (LAAS) has over 900 dedicated members who share a passionate interest in astronomy and Astro- Photography. Their ages range from children to adults with skills ranging from beginners to professionals in the fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Our members are helpful and enjoy teaching others about telescopes and how to use them. Our society offers the following:
Public Star Parties: Held once a month at Griffith Observatory, LAAS members come from all parts of Los Angeles County to show the public the wonders of the night sky.
Dark Sky Site: For members and guests only. This special once a month activity allows our LAAS members a place to escape from the LA lights to a darker territory where the bigger LAAS scopes, such as the club's 16-inch newtonian telescope can be used to observe the sky and the members can set up their own telescopes to observe and/or taking astrophotography pictures. We also host family nights in the warmer months when club members bring their families and friends along to enjoy a night of dark sky observation and even camp out under the stars.
Public Outreach Program: The LAAS runs a large Outreach Program and several of our members will bring telescopes to your school or organization. To request an outreach event, please use the REQUEST AN EVENT form. Complete the form and be sure to submit your informaton at the bottom of the form. Once we receive the form, we will be able to organize and schedule your event with our members. PLEASE NOTE: WE DO NOT DO PRIVATE PARTIES. We can also do a daytime activity with our solar telescopes as another option.
We do not ask our members to volunteer for private parties and we do not rent telescopes to the public.
Garvey Nights at the Garvey Ranch Park Observatory: Every Wednesday the LAAS opens up the Garvey Ranch Observatory in Monterey Park to the public. We have seasonal free astronomy classes for the public, fun and educational "Science Nights" and star parties out on the lawn in front of the observatory throughout the year. If you have a new scope and need help setting it up, bring it to the observatory and ask one of our members for assistance.
If you have any questions, please write to Communications@LAAS.org for further information.
Clear Skies!
