NSN members joined us on Tuesday, May 15, when Dr. Nicola Fox, the project scientist for NASA's Parker Solar Probe, shared with us the details about this upcoming mission that will directly experience the solar atmosphere.

NASA’s historic Parker Solar Probe mission will revolutionize our understanding of our closest star. The mission is named for Dr. Eugene N. Parker, whose other profound contributions have transformed our knowledge of the Sun. Parker Solar Probe will plunge through the Sun’s atmosphere, closer to the surface than any spacecraft before it, facing brutal heat and radiation conditions—and ultimately providing humanity with the first-ever close-up view of a star. Launch window is July 31 – August 19, 2018.

About Dr. Nicola Fox:
Dr. Fox is the Project Scientist for NASA's Parker Solar Probe mission.  Dr. Nicola "Nicky" Fox joined the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in 1998 as a research scientist where she studied various aspects of the geospace impact of coronal mass ejection events from the Sun. Since 2015, she has served as the Chief Scientist for Heliophysics in the Space Research Branch. Prior to joining APL, Nicky was a USA National Research Council fellow at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, and a research scientist at Raytheon, with special responsibilities for the operations of the NASA Polar spacecraft and the International Solar Terrestrial Physics Program. She earned a Ph.D. in physics from the Imperial College of Science, a master’s of science degree in telematics from the University of Surrey, and a bachelor’s degree in physics from the Imperial College of Science.

The Night Sky Network Outreach Toolkit: Our Magnetic Sun, has many activities you can use to engage your local audience in solar science.  In particular, the Sun in a Different Light Activity and Banner engages visitors to your events in exploring the Sun and its magnetic fields.

Send your name to the Sun!  (ends April 27).  The Parker Solar Probe will carry the names of everyone who enters their name on this first mission to directly explore the solar atmosphere.
