The NASA Night Sky Network welcomed Dean Regas to its monthly webinar series on February 27, 2019.  Dean took members us on a whirlwind tour of the known universe, by showing us some amazing simulation software: MIntaka

Rocket through space and sail among billions of stars and galaxies. Utilizing some amazing simulation software Dean Regas guides you through the mind-boggling scale of the universe. Along the way you’ll stop at the Moon and individual planets. Then you’ll make the jump to light speed and head to interstellar space and see all the galaxies in the universe. Don’t worry, he’ll have you back home in time for bed.

About Dean Regas

Dean is the co-host of Star Gazers, a new twist on an iconic backyard astronomy program which airs on over 100 PBS stations around the world. He is the author of the books "Facts From Space!" which hit the shelves in October 2016 and "100 Things to See in the Night Sky" published this past November. Dean is a Contributing Editor to Sky and Telescope Magazine and a contributor to Astronomy Magazine, where he won 2008 “Out-of-this-World” Award for astronomy education.  Dean has written over 120 astronomy articles for the Cincinnati Enquirer, blogged for the Huffington Post and is regularly featured on television and radio.  Since 2012 Dean has been a frequent guest on National Public Radio’s Science Fridaywith Ira Flatow, and this year he began an astronomy podcast with Anna Hehman called "Looking Up!"

At the Cincinnati Observatory, he has developed his skills as a dynamic writer and public speaker who brings the complicated field of astronomy down to Earth for students of all ages.

This is a fantastic webinar for people new to astronomy, or want a refresher on the scale of the known universe.  A perfect complement to this webinar for outreach events, either indoors, or outside during the day or while waiting for dark, is A Universe of Galaxies.  This activity takes participants on a walking tour of the universe with galaxies reduced to the size of a CD.  On a scale of 1 million light years in 4 feet, one gets a sense of the size of the known universe from the Andromeda Galaxy 8 feet from our home galaxy the Milky Way, to the Hubble Deep Field 10 miles away.
