Mars' opposition occurs on October 13, 2020.On this evening Mars is opposite the Sun in our sky and rises as the Sun sets, and will be visible all night.
Mars will appear much brighter than usual, and views through telescopes will show much more detail than usual! While closest approach was last week, Mars is still a great sight in a telescope and will remain one for many more weeks.
You can find more information on NASA's Mars Close Approach website. You can find an observing event near you on our event page. EarthSky has a great guide to observing Mars as well. You can also download a handout showing the positions of the planets in our solar system; you can do it yourself or download a Mars Opposition 2020 version customized by the KAO's Jerelyn Ramirez.
