Event

preview of star map zoomed in on featured event, the text says IF YOU CAN OBSERVE ONLY ONE CELESTIAL EVENT THIS MONTH, CONSIDER THIS ONE

Mars' opposition occurs on December 7, 2022.On this evening Mars is opposite the Sun in our sky and rises as the Sun sets, and will be visible all night - with one exception. For many observers in North America, the Moon will also occult, or pass in front of, Mars tonight! For a map with more details on where and when you can make this observation, go to In The Sky's page or refer to the guide linked above from the Astronomical League.

Mars will appear much brighter than usual, and views through telescopes will show much more detail than usual! While closest approach was last week, Mars is still a great sight in a telescope and will remain one for many more weeks.

You can find an observing event near you on our event page. EarthSky has a great guide to observing Mars as well.

Wondering about the celestial geometry on display? You can also download a handout showing the positions of the planets in our solar system; you can do it yourself or download a Mars Opposition 2022 version customized by the KAO's Jerelyn Ramirez - check it out below!
