To the general public:
On Friday, November 8th, Long Island Cares, The Harry Chapin Food Bank will be joining forces with two local astronomy clubs. Over 20 members of the Amateur Observers' Society of NY and Astronomical Society of Long Island will have their telescopes set up at Field 1 of Sunken Meadow State Park from 6pm-10pm. Attendees will be able to view the Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, and other nighttime wonders. These club members will provide breathtaking views through their equipment and that evening will be a prime time to appreciate the wonders of the night sky.
This event is for all ages and free to the general public. Attendees are highly encouraged, however, to bring non-perishable food or make a monetary donation at the event. Long Island Cares volunteers will be available to collect those donations.
About Long Island Cares, the Harry Chapin Food Bank:
Who We Are
Long Island Cares is Long Island’s first food bank.
Founded in 1980 by singer-songwriter and activist, Harry Chapin, our organization is dedicated to serving Long Island’s hungry and food insecure populations.
Long Island Cares is one of almost 200 food banks across America that provides food to people impacted by hunger and food insecurity. When founded, Long Island Cares served a mere handful of agencies in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, but today, it distributes more than ten million pounds of food and supplies annually to nearly 400 member agencies in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, and operates 5 satellite offices, plus our main office and warehouse in Hauppauge.
We operate out of three locations on Long Island, which also house three emergency food pantries as well as pet pantries: the Huntington location, the Nassau Service Center in Freeport and the South Shore Service Center in Lindenhurst.
If you are in need of emergency food, these three food pantries act as emergency pickup locations.
Both clubs will be providing telescopes for the public to view the night sky, Celestial objects will include the Moon, Saturn, Jupiter and a variety of interesting stars and star clusters.
Message for ASLI/AOSNY members: Please contact Don Simon if you would like to volunteer your time and your scope (if you have one).
