This is a special "Dark Sky" Star Party, held in the "Dark Phase" of the Moon.  With the Moon absent from the sky dimmer objects are revealed their glory.

It is an especially  good time to view Nebulae, Clusters, Double Stars, Individual Stars, possible Comets, possible Meteors, etc .

GLENSHAW, Pa. (October 7, 2013) -- See large clusters of stars, beautiful colored double stars without interference from the Moon, and view the planets Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune. It’s all part of the show during October Dark Sky Star Party sponsored by the Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh.
Wagman Star Party starts Saturday, October 26 at 6:25 PM, EDT at Nicholas E. Wagman Observatory, Deer Lakes Regional Park, Frazer Township, Pa., near the village of Russellton in northeastern Allegheny County and some 18 miles from Pittsburgh.
This is an opportunity for amateur astronomers, students and the general public to observe the wonders autumn skies and watch the Last Quarter Moon rise at 12:39 AM, EDT. Enjoy the views of the Andromeda Galaxy and Double Cluster in Perseus through the telescopes at the Observatory. This is the last of the regularly scheduled Public Star Parties at Wagman Observatory for 2013.

The 400 members of the Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh invite the public to Nicholas E. Wagman Observatory. Nearly 58,000 people have visited the observatory since its opening in 1987. Come and see what they've discovered and you've been missing.

Admission is free, though we gladly accept donations to cover the cost of operation. To reach Wagman Observatory, follow the Orange Belt (accessible from Routes 8 and 28) to Deer Lakes Park, near Russellton. Follow the road through the Park for 1.2 miles and turn left on to the Observatory grounds. Please use parking lights only when you drive through the gate.
For additional directions or to check on the weather conditions, please call the observatory at 724-224-2510. If you get our voice mail or a busy signal, keep trying. We receive many calls for information just before and during the star parties.

Instructions for the Public:
Directions: Coming up Route 28, get of at the Cheswick exit. It''s the first one after the Harmarville exit. Loop around to your right until you come to a four way stop. Turn right onto Little Deer Creek/Russellton Road. Follow it into Russellton. Turn right at the Laurel Savings Bank. Go under the train trestle and make a quick left turn into the park. It''s 1.2 miles to Wagman from there.

Additional Information:

Parking is available across from the main entrance and on the observatory grounds. Please be sure to follow the instructions provided by the parking attendant. Please turn off headlights and use Parking Lights, when turning off of the main road. Handicapped Parking is available next to the Observatory Building.

The observatory has no running water but does have a park style handicapped accessible outdoor restroom.

Smoking/Vaping is Prohibited, not only inside but also outside on the observatory grounds. Smoke damages the delicate telescope optics.

No Alcohol is permitted on the observatory grounds.
