Presented by Mark Whipple, Astronomy Club of Asheville member and OLLI instructor.
Astronomers might argue over this, but one could say that there have been four gigantic advancements in astronomical technology in human history: Galileo's first telescope in 1609, the Mount Wilson observatory in the early 20th century, the Hubble Space Telescope, and now this new achievement – the James Webb Space Telescope. In each case, the pioneers using these instruments had no idea what discoveries they would make, which included proof that the Earth was not the center of the Universe, and that our own Milky Way galaxy is not alone but surrounded by countless others in an expanding cosmos. It would be naive to assume that the JWST will not provide just as drastic a revisualization of our place in the universe as its predecessors, and those discoveries have barely begun.
