Event Report

Comments and anecdotes about the event:
On Saturday, January 20, 2024, the Association for Observation, Astronomical Dissemination and Space Sciences (AODACE), in collaboration with Dreyfous, carried out the Children in Space Workshop: An astronomy project for young people with great success. The workshop was created and led by Teresita Sosa, secretary of AODACE, who led this event that left a lasting impression on all participants. During the workshop, young people were immersed in a world of knowledge through various talks and activities focused on astronomy and space sciences. In the area of physics, Prof. Edgardo Alverio, member of AODACE, explained the steps of space rocket takeoff, providing a detailed vision of what is needed for a space mission to be successful. He also gave them information about the effects of microgravity on the human body when it is in Space. Eng. Grace Rodrguez, also from AODACE, provided the young enthusiasts with theoretical information about the structure of the parts of a space rocket and they explored the operation of each component. Through a dynamic, the young people put into practice escape velocity concepts essential to achieving flight. Juan Gonzlez, president of AODACE, offered the young people a talk on Exploration of the Universe where regions with extrasolar planets were identified. He also instructed them on the use and operation of the Sundial (sundial) and they put the acquired knowledge into practice. The highlight of the workshop was creating a space mission in small groups. After the theoretical part, the young people assembled rocket models and explained in detail the type of mission they would carry out. This exercise encouraged creativity and critical thinking among participants. One of the most exciting parts of the workshop came with the telescope viewing night, where young people and parents marveled at observing the impressive lunar craters, as well as the planet Jupiter and three of its visible moons. We greatly appreciate Yazmn Santiago, Director of Operations at Arecibo C3 (formerly Arecibo Observatory) who shared crucial information about the 5 risks or "Hazard" that can arise during a space mission, providing a realistic perspective to young enthusiasts.
