Dear members:
Last November, members of the Astronomical Society of Kansas City joined us for a Cub Scout Pack meeting, bringing telescopes for outdoor viewing and leading engaging indoor activities. The Scouts had a fantastic time, and we’d love to invite your team to join us again this year!
We’re planning a special Tiger Den meeting for our 11 first-graders focused on the Sky is the Limit adventure on Wednesday, March 6th. Sunset that evening is at 5:50 PM, which should be perfect for some star and planet gazing.
This adventure encourages the Tigers to explore the night sky and learn about constellations and telescopes. Here’s a summary of the requirements we’ll be working on:
- Observe the night sky and discuss what can be seen there.
- Look through a telescope, binoculars, or camera and demonstrate how to focus the device.
- Identify two constellations and create a picture of one.
- Create a homemade model of a constellation.
Then here's the link to the adventure resource page, in case you're interested in seeing the suggested activities for each requirement: https://www.scouting.org/cub-scout-adventures/sky-is-the-limit/
Your expertise would make this experience truly memorable for the Scouts. If your team is available, we’d be thrilled to collaborate and coordinate any special materials or activities you’d like to bring.
Thank you so much for your past support, and I look forward to hearing from you soon!
Yours in Scouting,
Andrew

Joe,
I received a request for an Outreach Event for a pack of Tiger Cubs. There will be 11 first graders, so this will not be a late evening. Their program is “Observe the Night Sky” and will have a well-organized event plan from their end.
Organizer, Cubmaster, Pack 3136: Andrew Frye

Requested Date: Thursday, 03/06/2025
Start Time: 5:50 PM (This means our people will need to arrive NLT 5:30 for setup.)
Location: Sunflower Elementary School
8955 Loiret Blvd, Lenexa, KS 66219
We had a similar event with this group last year and I received good feedback for both our indoor and outdoor activities. Andrew would like to have both indoor activities and outdoor telescopes. We have a first quarter Moon and Venus to view prior to and after Sunset. After Sunset we’ll have Jupiter. Mars may be a little too late for this young group but is a potential viewing opportunity. Kids love and relate to all these objects.
Indoors? We need David’s meteorite display, a big hit last year. We have other members with indoor displays. I plan to work outside, but I will bring my “Color in Space” demo materials if needed and work inside.
Cloudy weather? Everyone moves indoors. I will tape my poster of the Moon to a wall for the telescopes to target. It works well in school gyms. Discussions with the cubs about how telescopes work will be welcome. I will bring my “Light in Space” materials if needed.
Put my name on the volunteer list, and please let me know if there is anything else you need.
Clear skies,
Jerel Williams
