Event

The civic league would like to invite all Croatan neighbors to this event on the public beach at Croatan. There will be an array of ages. We would like to learn about the constellations, the planets visible, as well as the moon (and a little about tide influence). We welcome any and all knowledge that the club would like to share with our residents. I'd also like an opportunity for the residents to look through a telescope at anything that is difficult to see with the naked eye, if possible. Please let us know if the telescope can be set up on the sand, or if other arrangements need to be made.

Event Report

Comments and anecdotes about the event:
Despite a threat of clouds, Russell Hippert and I set up telescopes at the Croatan Beach about 8"30 pm. Soon the sky cleared enough to see Saturn, and then the clouds moved away from Jupiter. Guests had excellent views of both planets in my 80mm refractor and Samantha's 8" Dob at 48x and 120x. We also showed the Moon in Russell's scope and my 80mm refractor. I was able to point out the bright stars Arcturus, Antares, Deneb, Vega, and Altair and the Summer Triangle. Everyone had a good time, and we were glad we didn't totally believe the weather forecast.
