The Cincinnati Astronomical Society (CAS) is honored to announce that it has been awarded an Ohio Historical Marker to commemorate the work done by CAS members during the dawn of the space-age.
The launch of Sputnik 1 by the Soviet Union on October 4, 1957 ushered in new political, military, technological, educational and scientific developments. American engineers and scientists answered Sputnik with the launch on January 31, 1958 of Explorer 1. The Space Race culminated with American astronauts first stepping foot on the moon on July 29, 1969. During the early years of this new Space Age amateur astronomers of the Cincinnati Astronomical Society utilized their three large permanently mounted telescopes to optically track the highly reflective satellites which were often too small to carry radio transmitters. They contributed thousands of hours to the tracking of Earth orbiting satellites and confirmation of their orbits.
