“The 60 Year Synergy Between Star Trek and Real-World Space Exploration”
Join us for an hour-long deep dive into the mutual synergy between the Star Trek science fiction franchise and real-world space exploration.
For 60 years, Star Trek has been a beloved series in TV and in movies, providing a powerful, utopian vision that inspired generations of astronauts, scientists, engineers, and NASA itself. As NASA space law and policy expert Mike Gold says, “Star Trek has always been an inspiration for many of us in the space field.” That feeling is confirmed by NASA Artemis II astronaut Victor Glover, who stated , “Science and Star Trek go hand-in-hand.”
This presentation by Club board member Harold Wood will explore how the fictional Star Trek world served as inspiration and sometimes a blueprint for real-world modern space exploration, including manned missions like the Space Shuttle and the Artemis Mission to the Moon, as well as robotic missions exploring the outer solar system.
