Event

Join us at the Clay Family Eastern Glades Memorial Park, 6502 Memorial Dr., Houston, TX 77007 in the North Pavilion on the 3rd Saturday of every month except in July and August (not enough darkness then) for a totally free[1] and fun evening of amateur astronomy from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm rain or shine[2]
In 2024, we meet: Saturday March 16, April 20, May 18, June 15, September 21, October 19, and November 16.  The park is closed for Christmas.
Besides current major celestial events, weather permitting, we typically show:
  • A  30’ model of the solar system (Sun to Mars – Jupiter and Saturn are too far at that scale) before darkness for kids of all ages.
  • Major constellations and asterisms and their legends.
  • Telescope use (yes, all including kids can touch them!) and observation of the stars and visible planets.  Please bring your own telescope, we can help!
  • Binocular astronomy help (please bring your own pair).
  • Computer displays of free astronomy software, DVDs and presentations in the North pavilion (a saver when the weather is bad).
  • Q&A with amateur astronomers, scientists, engineers and STEM educators.
  • Flyers describing the moon and its phases, the constellations, asterisms and notable objects visible that month, a list of relevant URLs (including free software from the net), science magazines, etc.

[1] No membership necessary.  Come ALL and bring kids!
[2]In bad weather we retreat to the shelter with our scopes.  If no one has shown up by 8pm,we go home

Event Report

Comments and anecdotes about the event:
I counted about forty visitors last night from about 19:00 and later; a quarter of those visitors were children and three quarters arrived before nine. HAS arrived with ten scopes and at least one pair of binocs. Because we're so near the solstice, early visitors looked at the sun until it dipped lower in the sky and the moon and stars took center stage. Some early evening visitors took a look, left, and came back later in the evening to experience darker skies. Thanks Joyce, Mac, Salil, Joe, Kirill, Khady and all I do not even know the name of who came Saturday night. We also had brisk business in the Rally pavilion and I bored a few kids with the solar system scale and Stellarium or moon atlas demo. Only a few moon maps and old S&T were left at closing time. Seeing the diminished piles of various handouts, I estimate the flow at 60 or so in the pavilion, mostly adults. Unfortunately my 300' extension cords were insufficient to bring power to the bridge, I'll need 1,000' next time... For once, the sky was clear, that was indeed a great evening. The park people were quite happy too. We have to do that again.
