From Joyce Almaguer-Reisdorf who organized it: We had a magical Saturday evening at Memorial Park, y'all. Thank you to those who came out. Special thanks to Amelia and Steve Goldberg for bringing our special visitor, Dr. David Levy, who encouraged us to find wonder and joy in the skies, and thanks to Erika from Memorial Park Conservancy for finding a small PA system so he could speak to us as a group. (And thanks to Steve for encouraging her to find the PA at first, she was pretty sure she couldn't acquire one!) I started the evening trying to keep track of our attendees but quickly lost track. Do you have any guesses for how many people came together? Some of my observations: - We had a lot of folks new to the club! Welcome! - Visitors started dropping by as early as 7, even though it was still cloudy and quite bright. - Some visitors discovered our scopes while strolling or jogging by, but many arrived specifically for the event. One couple even drove in from the Woodlands. Wow! - Many of our astronomers brought friends. I hope they all had a nice night and will be back next time. - One young person observed in wonder that the moon looked still when he looked at it with his naked eye, but with a telescope, he could actually watch the moon move across the sky. It's amazing, I agree! - We had different levels of experience in the group, and people really helped each other out. We all learned something new that night, for sure. - Gratitude to the moon, which shone through the wispy clouds of the earlier part of the evening and gave us a beautiful target for our telescopes.
