Event Report

Comments and anecdotes about the event:
I set up a display using an Earth globe and a light source for the Sun and darkened the room to illustrate the Earth's seasons. I pointed out the Arctic Circle and how it is in darkness during the Winter season and constant daylight during the Summer season. I was able to demonstrate this activity with my props. A question was asked by one of the boys, "when do they have a 'normal' day and night"? I thought it was a great question, so I showed him when the Earth is in the Autumn and Spring seasons the Arctic and Antarctic Circles have a 'normal' day and night cycle. I followed up with what the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn is, and the Antarctic Circle. We then drew constellations to become familiar with them. I had them using a planisphere to help them understand what constellations will be available at a designated date and time. I displayed a poster with the phases of the Moon as seen from Earth and from space so they could understand the relationship of this concept. I used the Moon phase cards as another tool to help them understand. We did go over some of the robotic missions from past, present, and future missions to get them to start thinking about their oral presentation they are required to make as one of their projects to complete this Sky Puppy program.
