Event

A free public event is coming up at the Wichita Advanced Learning Library Branch. A planetarium will be set up in conference room C where you can take a tour of the constellations in the October sky. Then we will travel through the solar system and do a fly by visit of all the planets, and where they are in their respective orbits around the Sun. Yes, we will visit the binary pair of Pluto and Charon.

After we explore the solar system we will travel out to a Globular Cluster in the constellation Hercules called M13, sometimes called the Great Globular Cluster that consists of several hundred thousand stars. The light from all those stars can be seen naked eye on a clear moonless night.

The tour will take around 30 minutes to travel to these distant bodies and then back to Earth. But before we land back on Earth we will travel to Earth's natural sattelite, our Moon. We will see Earth from the perspective of the Moon. The crew of Apollo 8 were the first to orbit the Moon and also the first to witness and photograph an Earthrise. The crew of Apollo 8 were Frank Borman, William Anders, and James Lovell Jr.

A signup sheet will be available at the library to reserve your tour. The planetarium will be available for 3 days only and seating is limited per tour. The planetarium show is wheelchair friendly where we can accommodate one wheelchair per showing.

All aboard!

Information for Visitors
Instructions for the Public:

Be aware: If you have claustrophobic or motion sickness tendencies, the planetarium is a 16 foot diameter inflatable dome with several people seated on the floor near you. As we travel through the solar system it can cause motion dizziness. Looking away temporarily can help with motion dizziness.

Patrons will be allowed to bring a small pillow to sit upon inside the dome while sitting on the floor.

The planetarium dome is wheelchair friendly to allow one wheelchair per show. The person in the wheelchair will enter first before the other patrons.

Event Report

Comments and anecdotes about the event:
Portable Planetarium Presentations at the Wichita Library: From October 24 through October 26, Chris Ketron, Brent Neas, and I presented a total of 19 planetarium shows at the Wichita Advanced Learning Library using Fort Hays State University's portable planetarium. Audiences were enthusiastic and asked lots of questions as we taught them how to recognize key fall constellations and took them on a guided tour of several planets in our solar system. I led the morning and early-afternoon shows, and Chris took over for the final shows of the day. Brent provided important assistance with crowd control and other logistics. A power outage at the library forced cancellation of a few of the Tuesday shows, but many of those guests re-scheduled for Wednesday and we were able to fit them in. Almost as popular as the planetarium shows was the craft Chris brought: children and adults alike enjoyed making their own constellation models out of black pipe cleaners and glow-in-the-dark beads. It was fun to see some of the more ambitious kids take on very elaborate constellation designs. Over the course of the three days, we presented shows to a total of 311 guests. Many of the shows were sold out, and the library has already expressed interest in having us return next year. Thanks to Jerelyn Ramirez for lining this up, to Chris and Brent for their good work, and to Sarah Kittrell at the library for being in charge of registering guests for the shows. -Submitted by Ron Mallory
