Public Star Party at White Memorial Conservation Center
For 2025, there will be a public star party on the fourth Friday from February through October, and on the third Friday of November. Each star party begins with a talk on an astronomical topic of interest, followed, weather permitting, by observing. The talk will proceed even if the weather does not permit stargazing (barring a blizzard, of course).
This month's talk topic is Asteroids. Most asteroids are in what's called the "Main Belt", between Mars and Jupiter, but there are groups in other regions of the Solar System. Pete will talk about asteroids, where they are, and what they tell us about the early Solar System. [2025: Vesta, brightest of the asteroids, is just visible with binoculars this month. If the weather cooperates, we'll try to spot it from the observatory.]
No prior knowledge of astronomy is required - just curiosity. Observing will be at the club's observatory on the grounds of White Memorial. Club members will use the club's telescopes to show the wonders of the night sky and describe objects of interest. Feel free to bring binoculars or a telescope.
Free; open to the public. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Dress warmly, as even in the summer it may be chilly.
