Erica Messmer will be tonight's speaker at 7:30 pm at the observatory.

"When Stars Attack! Nearby Supernovae and Earth"                                                 with Erica Messmer
                  Wednesday, January 15, 2025 at 7:30 p.m.

What happens when a massive star reaches the end of its life?       It explodes in a brilliant burst known as a supernova, releasing vast   amounts of energy and creating the heavy elements that make up the     Earth—and even our bodies. In her upcoming talk, Erica Messmer will   explore the fascinating world of supernovae and their cosmic   aftermath. What would it mean if a supernova occurred near Earth?   How do astronomers study these powerful stellar explosions, and what   can they tell us about the history of our Solar System?

Erica's talk, titled "When Stars Attack! Nearby Supernovae and Earth," will delve into the impact supernovae have on the galaxy, our planet, and the elements we are made of. While the thought of a nearby supernova might sound like a doomsday scenario, Erica will explain how, millions of years ago, our Solar System experienced the effects of a nearby supernova. She will also discuss ongoing research and what it means for understanding our place in the galaxy.

Erica Messmer's journey to astronomy is anything but typical. After spending a decade as a chef, she returned to school to earn her B.S. in Physics from Northeastern Illinois University. She is now pursuing a Ph.D. in Astronomy at the University of Illinois, focusing her research on supernova remnants. Outside of her academic work, Erica enjoys spending time with her cats and knitting.

This presentation will be shown on our big screen at the Martz-Kohl Observatory and available online via Zoom. You are encouraged to come to the observatory to virtually meet Erica Messmer and join in our always lively Q&A after his talk. Later, if the weather cooperates, we offer tours and viewing opportunities through the big telescopes. Dress appropriately for the weather as if you were outside. While the classroom is heated, the domes are not.
