Event Report

Comments and anecdotes about the event:
Pleasant mild evening with clear skies. We had 4 telescopes brought by SLAS members, and one additional telescope brought by a visitor. I presented safe solar viewing while the Sun was still up. I used a Thousand Oaks white-light safe solar filter. A large group of sunspots was visible at the 7-oclock position on the Sun's disk (as viewed through my SCT). Once the Sun set, we presented views of the 11-day old waxing gibbous moon. This was a rare event held on a Friday evening, since the usual Wednesday date was rained out. As such, the Moon was 2 days older and further east than usual for us. The view was spectacular. We also presented views of Jupitper. Callisto and Ganymede were visible on one side of Jupiter, and Io and Europa on the other. I rounded up the evening by showing Mars, high in the sky. It appeared small through my 9mm Plossl, but some detail was visible. A very enjoyable evening for all!
