Moon and Stars – From Your Backyard

Fifty years ago, NASA’s Apollo astronauts traveled to the Moon. In addition to computers on the ground and experts at Houston’s Mission Control, the astronauts used stars to help navigate. Half a century later, you can look at the Moon and see the same stars from your back yard. This program will show you how to find lunar features like the Sea of Tranquility, where “The Eagle has landed”.  You will see up close the craters, mountains, and valleys of the Moon’s surface from Apollo astronaut photos and modern robotic spacecraft images. You will learn about the bright stars and their constellation patterns visible now in the night sky, just as they were seen by Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins from Apollo 11. You will also learn how to identify the planets now visible. And you may choose to see the lunar features, planets, double stars, and star clusters through a telescope – like the telescope that you can borrow from this library!

Date: Wednesday, June 26, 2019

Time: 1 p.m. - 2 p.m. Central

Location: Festus Public Library
400 West Main Street
