VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR ST. LOUIS ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY BOOTH - Spirit of St. Louis AirShow, June 8-9, 2024 in Chesterfield
The St. Louis Astronomical Society has secured a booth at the Spirit of St. Louis Airshow scheduled in Chesterfield on Saturday, June 8th and Sunday, June 9th. Show hours for the public are 9am to 5pm each day.
If you are not familiar with the event, the two-day Spirit of St. Louis Air Show and STEM Expo is presented by Boeing with the goal of promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) as well as aviation education and career opportunities. The show features the Blue Angels and is expected to draw more than 50,000 visitors.
The St. Louis Astronomical Society's booth will be next to the booth of the DarkSky Missouri/Lights Out Heartland. Both booths will be very active with telescope displays, lighting displays, computer displays, and hands on exhibits. Show officials have waived our booth fees as we have demonstrated in previous shows that both booths are very popular with visitors.
Accordingly, volunteers are needed to support the St. Louis Astronomical Society exhibit at the show. The emphasis on activities will require heavier than normal volunteer assistance. Volunteers will receive a free ticket to enter the show and park for free -- a nice perk since general admission for Saturday is $40.00 and for Sunday is $35.00.
Due to setup and breakdown of the exhibits, volunteers are needed from 8am to 5:00pm each day. Due to the long hours, each day is split into two shifts of 4-1/2 hours each so that volunteers can help with the exhibit and have time to enjoy the show before/after their volunteer time. We have limited free tickets available so it is important that volunteers participate at their designated time or alert us early enough to repurpose their tickets. Volunteers are welcome and encouraged to work more than one shift. Our exhibit will be under a tent with electricity, chairs, etc. Volunteers working the afternoon shift should allow extra drive time as traffic can be busy at mid-day when entering the show.
Volunteer shifts are as follows:
SATURDAY, JUNE 5, 2024
Shift 1: 8am - 12:30 pm
Shift 2: 12:30 pm - 5:00 pm
SATURDAY, JUNE 6, 2024
Shift 3: 8am - 12:30 pm
Shift 4: 12:30 pm - 5:00 pm
Feedback from past volunteers is they really like volunteering at the show and exhibits. Don't worry if you do not feel like you are an expert on astronomy as we will have plenty people to help you and we will bring all the necessary equipment. I will be participating in all shifts of the show, so you will always have backup.
If you are able to volunteer, please email me at donaldficken@sbglobal.net with your shift preferences. Volunteers will be assigned on a first come, first serve basis.
