Join Seven Ponds Astronomy Club, meteorite collector Mark Jeffery, University of Michigan Planetarium's Buddy Stark, Lapeer District Library and St. Clair County Library System for a night of astronomy. The amateur astronomers of the Seven Ponds Astronomy Club wll guide you, your family and friends through an exciting evening of celestial fun and enjoyment under the skies at the Seven Ponds Nature Center. Clear or Cloudy, this free event occurs on Saturday, June 24th from 7:00pm until midnight. Activities will include telescope observing of the Sun and night sky (weather permitting), hands-on crafts for the children, story time, displays, meteorites and astronomy presentations. This event will go on rain or shine.
Schedule of Activities: 7:00pm until 10:00pm - Library displays, crafts, stories and the meteorite collection. 7:00pm – midnight - Weather permitting, the Seven Ponds Astronomy Club members will provide you with close-up and personal views of the Sun, Moon, planets, star clusters, and double stars through their telescopes and binoculars.
Classroom Presentations: • 7:30pm - "Astronomy 101" - Ron Kyle-A range of topics are given. First, a clear definition of what astronomy is and is not is given. Next, a review of the various types of instruments that can be used to view the night sky is provided. Lastly, the presentation transitions into practical explanations of both the size of objects in the sky, whether near or far, and the size of universe itself.
8:30pm - Dr. Dale Partin-topic TBD • 9:30pm – Additional presentations in the event of bad weather.
