Event

ALL PROGRAMS RAIN OR SHINE 8-10PM
APR 16-Full Moon. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be fully illuminated. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Pink Moon because it marked the appearance of the moss pink, or wild ground phlox, which is one of the first spring flowers. Lyrids Meteor Shower. The Lyrids is an average shower, usually producing about 20 meteors per hour at its peak. It is produced by dust particles left behind by comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher, which was discovered in 1861. The shower runs annually from April 16-25. Time machines will be provided by the Westminster Astronomy Club. MAY 21 -Total Lunar Eclipse on May 16th (First of two this year). A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes completely through the Earth's dark shadow, or umbra. During this type of eclipse, the Moon will gradually get darker and then take on a rusty or blood red color. The eclipse will be visible throughout all of North America. Come explore how they happen and when the next one is. Time machines will be provided by the Westminster Astronomy Club. JUN 18-TWO PROGRAMS THIS MONTH. 2-5 PM-Scale model walk-solar viewing. Join us for a walk around the solar system as we visit several planets. Start and end in the fiery furnace of the sun with solar viewing. 8-10 PM -Journey to the stars and learn why they are different colors. Visit other galaxies (staying away from the Delta quadrant, the Borg are there), and maybe getting a look at Neptune. Jul 16- Join us in the evening to see Hercules’s hairy armpit, A swan and learn why Queen Cassiopeia was related to the Kardashian’s. Time machines will be provided by the Westminster Astronomy Club. Aug 20-The Perseid's is one of the best meteor showers to observe, producing up to 60 meteors per hour at its peak. The Perseid's are famous for producing a large number of bright meteors. The shower runs annually from July 17 to August 24. It peaks this year on the night of August 12 and the morning of August 13. Time machines will be provided by the Westminster Astronomy Club. One lucky person will win a meteorite at tonight's program. SEP 17- Join us to see Neptune at Opposition. The blue giant planet will be at its closest approach to Earth and its face will be fully illuminated by the Sun. It will be brighter than any other time of the year and will be visible all night long. This is the best time to view and photograph Neptune. Due to its extreme distance from Earth, it will only appear as a tiny blue dot in all but the most powerful telescopes, WHICH WE HAVE! Time machines will be provided by the Westminster Astronomy Club. OCT 15- Join us during the day and then come back in the evening for our final program of the year in our search for the ghost, goblins, monsters of the sky and Algol the demon star! Explore our nearest neighbor the Moon. Time machines will be provided by the Westminster Astronomy Club.
