Event

This is our annual Astronomy Day being held by both Amateur Astronomers, Inc. (AAI) and the North Jersey Astronomical Group (NJAG). This event is what we refer to as a split event. We are holding Astronomy Day at 2 locations. In the afternoon we will be at Trailside Nature & Science Center, located at 452 New Providence Road, Mountainside, NJ 07092, from 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm. Then we hold the evening portion at William Miller Sperry Observatory located on the campus of Union College of Union County, NJ, 1033 Springfield Ave., Cranford, NJ 07016 from 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm. The event is free and open to the public. There is also free parking at both locations.  For more infomation contact info@asterism.org.

Our theme is "Our Strange Universe". We will have presentations and activities related to those strange objects and events that occur in our Universe such as black holes, light spectrum, exoplanets and more.

In the afternoon at Trailside, we have the following activities for all ages: 

1. Presentations on black holes, light spectrum, exoplanets and how meteorites helped to form our world

2. Children's activities on black holes, making easy spectrographs, investigating light and more

3. Safe solar observing, a solar system walk and science demonstrations on gravity, light spectrum and cosmic rays

4. High school robotics team - (scroll down for more information)

5. Scavenger hunt on astrophotography images

In the evening at Sperry Observatory, we have the following activities:

1. A presentation on "Dark and Weird Space Things" beginning at 8:00 pm

2. Door prizes for children

3. Observing through AAI's 2 large telescopes (weather permitting), a 24-inch reflector and a 10-inch refractor.

Information for Visitors
Instructions for the Public:

You are welcome to come to Trailside any time between 12:00 pm and 4:00 pm. Feel free to wonder through Trailside's building and attend any of the activities, presentations, and demonstrations that are in progress. This event is not only for children but adults too.

Note that food and beverages, including water, are not permitted in the building. And there are no concession stands. Feel free to bring your own lunch and sit outside at picnic tables that are nearby.

In the evening at Sperry Observatory if you enter the building after 8:00 pm please enter quietly as a presentation will be in progress. If the weather prevents observing, we will still display and explain the Obsrevatory's 2 large telescopes. Also, food and beverages, including water, are not permitted in the Observatory.
