Coming this October the Astronomical Society of East Texas (ASET) is proud to collaborate with the American Astronomical Society (AAS) for their 2026 Shapley Lecture Series. 

Tyler Texas is one of those lucky destinations with Dr. Angela Speck (pictured 2nd row in the center), professor at University of Texas at San Antonio. Speck is originally from the UK where she studied Astrophysics at Queen Mary University of London. She went on to at University College London for her P.h.D in Astronomy, her thesis being "The Mineralogy of Dust Around Evolved Stars" (1998). Her research today focuses on the study of infrared light as it relates to star dust, giving insight to the formation of planets, stars, and other cosmic objects. She uses spectroscopy, imaging, and modelling to study the chemical composition of stars.

Dr. Speck will be presenting Neon Skies: Why Space Looks So Colorful. In the talk, you will learn all about spectra and the signals encoded in light.

This presentation will be at the Taylor Auditorium at the Tyler Public Library.
