Event

Crash of the Asteroids... where did the dinosaurs go? How an asteroid ended the age of the dinosaurs? Let's look into the past when an asteroid impact triggered global wildfires, tsunamis, and years-long winter from debris blocking the sun.

This is the asteroid Ceres. It is the largest asteroid in our solar system orbiting between Jupiter and Mars in the asteroid belt. Ceres is about 584 miles in diameter, comparable to the size of Texas, or about a quarter the size of Earth's Moon. It was visited by the Dawn Mission Probe in February 2015.

Event Report

Comments and anecdotes about the event:
It was a really nice turnout from kids to adults. I put together a PowerPoint presentation while incorporating some hands on activities about asteroids, craters on the Moon and the Earth, leading up to the dinosaur extinction event. We learned about how to use infrared technology over visual to locate asteroids more easily. We also learned how far way the Moon is from the Earth if you shrunk the Earth to one meter in diameter. It would be about 3 school busses bumper to bumper. The kids were encouraged to draw and paint pictures of asteroids, they had an asteroid toss, and made craters in a tub of flour. The library launched their Library Telescope Program this week so I promoted that as well for them. They will have 5 telescopes available for circulation for their library patrons.
