Continuing the well attended, AOSNY Beyond the Eyepiece Series - Frontiers of Discovery
"Exploring the Places Behind the Discoveries We Observe."
AOS Members visit and discover as an astronomy club, developing and connecting what members see through their telescopes with the institutions, researchers, and discoveries that explain those objects first hand.
Past locations:
- Frontiers of Discovery #1 – Bell Labs - Holmdale Complex - Bell Labs gave us the transistor, information theory, and radio astronomy advances.
- Frontiers of Discovery #2 – Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory - A facility dedicated to recreating and controlling the power of the stars here on Earth. At Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, scientists study plasma—the fourth state of matter and the substance that makes up nearly all visible objects in the universe—in pursuit of one of humanity's greatest scientific goals: practical fusion energy.
- Frontiers of Discovery #3 – Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory - Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory is one of the world's leading Earth science research institutions and the birthplace of discoveries that transformed our understanding of the planet. From helping prove the theory of plate tectonics to unlocking Earth's climate history and exploring the deepest oceans, LDEO continues to reveal how our world works. For astronomers, it offers a unique opportunity to study the only known habitable planet in detail and gain insights that help us understand planets throughout the universe.
- Frontiers of Discovery #4 – Brookhaven National Laboratory - Brookhaven National Laboratory stands at the intersection of physics, astronomy, and cosmology. Home to world-class research facilities and groundbreaking discoveries, Brookhaven allows scientists to explore matter at its most fundamental level and recreate conditions that existed moments after the Big Bang. From particle accelerators and dark matter research to medical innovations and advanced materials' science, Brookhaven continues to expand humanity's understanding of both the universe and ourselves.
- Frontiers of Discovery #5 – Vassar College - Vassar College occupies a unique place in the history of American astronomy. Home to pioneering astronomer Maria Mitchell and one of the nation's earliest college observatories, Vassar helped shape the future of astronomical research and education in the United States. More than a center of learning, it became a symbol of opportunity, discovery, and the belief that scientific exploration should be open to all. For astronomers, a visit to Vassar is an opportunity to walk in the footsteps of one of America's greatest astronomical pioneers and celebrate a legacy that continues to inspire observers more than a century later.
