Event

Join the NASA Night Sky Network on Wednesday, March 25, at 6:00 PM Pacific Time (9:00 PM Eastern), along with Dave Doody, where we’ll discuss sidewalk outreach for Jupiter’s moon, Europa, the Jovian system, and the Europa mission.

For our March 2026 webinar, Dave Doody will share his experience conducting “Surprise from the Sidewalk” observing sessions—informal, public-facing astronomy experiences that invite passers-by to view Jupiter, Europa, and the other Galilean moons in the evening sky. He will discuss practical lessons learned, safety tips, and the unique rewards of bringing telescopic views to people who may never plan to attend a star party or astronomy talk. Participants will hear how these spontaneous encounters often spark wonder, captured in reactions like, “I never knew you could actually see that!” The webinar will also explore what to share about Europa as an ocean world, and why it is a target of such intense scientific interest.

About SPEAKER:

Dave Doody works as a senior engineer for Caltech at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, leading the Europa Clipper Realtime Flight Operations team, whose members send commands to the Spacecraft and work with the Deep Space Network to collect the various kinds of data for the Mission's navigators, scientists, and system engineers. He did the same kind of work on Cassini’s twenty-year flight, meanwhile, hawking “surprise” views of Saturn and Titan from the sidewalk. He’s the author of the “Basics of Space Flight” training guide (NASA Basics)
