Comments and anecdotes about the event:
George Reynolds took the group on a tour of the night sky in the lecture room, including discussion of exciting parts of the summer sky and the moon. After a 45-minute presentation, he brought the group out to the back deck of Norfolk Botanical Gardens where they joined Jeremy Mitchell and Jeffrey Thornton for an observing session. Despite moderate thin clouds and thunderclouds flashing in the distance, the group was able to share the differences of a newtonian reflector, a refractor, and a Maksutov-Cassegrain in viewing the moon, the Double Double, Mizar/Alcor, and even the ghost of the Ring Nebula!
A devoted instructor and Solar System Ambassador, George Reynolds leads the July session of "Garden Stars" at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens through a thorough review of the Night Sky. No planets? No problem! There were still plenty of things on display despite the heat, haze, and light pollution. Phot Credit: J. Mitchell
Big scopes can travel, but not without a cost. Setup and preparation is key. Jeff Thornton was kind enough to help Jeremy Mitchell check and correct the collimation on his 12" dobsonian while waiting for the classroom portion to end and the sky to darken - then Garden Stars could start in earnest!
