Event

Learn to use the library telescope, watch the Belt of Venus rise as the sun sets, and see the planets. Mars, Jupiter and Venus are bright, Saturn is getting low in the west and it may already be in the trees. Saturn will be leaving the evening sky and will reappear in the morning dawn. The almost-full moon will be rising as the library gets ready to close.

Comments and anecdotes about the event:
The first people I met at the library today were the local library manager, her immediate supervisor, the executive director of all the Central Arkansas Library system and the director of the Encyclopedia of Arkansas. They were interested in how we are promoting the Library Telescope program and the Sidewalk Astronomy outreach. The executive director is planning to come to an April presentation we will be doing in April. They were very gracious to thank us for doing this activity with the libraries. Several patrons came today specifically to learn how to use the telescope. Perhaps the social medial information the library is putting out is working! Carl and I used the moon spheres on sticks to explain the phases of the moon and the phases of Venus. Not as many people were at the library tonight, but it was encouraging how interested the ones were who stopped by our setup. Mars, Jupiter, Venus and the full moon (rising eerily through the tree branches) were our telescope targets. We have the optical bench from the Glass and Mirrors kit and Carl is teaching me more about it.
