Event

Come on out to the Lake Afton Public Observatory and see the Total Lunar Eclipse. This will be a special opening for this cosmic event. The Moon will be rising in the constellation Libra this night passing through the Earth's shadow out in space creating what we call a Lunar Eclipse. Because of the tilt of the orbital plane of the Moon around the Earth is about 5 degrees of the Earth's plane around the Sun, most of the time the Moon misses the Earth's shadow by going above or below it. When the conditions are right the Moon will cross paths with the Earth's shadow. Watch the 3 minute 17 second video below, under information for visitors.

Event Report

Comments and anecdotes about the event:
This event took place out at the Lake Afton Public Observatory. When the the Moon started to enter the Umbra part of the Earth's shadow it was too low for the telescope inside the dome to get a fix on it. It was only later during mid eclipse the Moon was in line of site of the telescope above the door opening. There were a few personal telescopes from club members on site to share with the public where they were able to take images of the Moon with their smartphones through the 12" reflector telescope. In the exhibit room they had on display what occurs during a lunar eclipse on a continuous loop video. During the total eclipse the participating club members shared some deep sky objects to the public. One visitor brought along a telescope from the Wichita Library to observe the Moon with. The Wichita Library has 15 telescopes available for patrons to check out like a book. One club member made a comment when the Moon was fully eclipsed in the Earth's shadow and glowing orange, he stated 'That is the best view of Mars I have ever seen'. LOL
