Public observing is provided at no cost to visitors and members.  Lima Astronomical Society programming and outreach events are possible thanks to donations from individuals and organizations throughout the region.

Parking is available in the grass along the main drive leading up to the observatory.  Upon entering the observatory, sign the guestbook to let us know how many are in your party.  Please look around and and ask questions!  Cold drinks and snacks are available with a cash donation.

Be advised that climbing a flight of stairs will be necessary to access the observatory dome.

We recommend this event for ages 5+.

General Guidelines

• Dress for the weather.  The observatory dome is not climate controlled.
• You will notice red lights around the perimeter of the dome.  Red light affects human night vision the least, and is often used at night in astronomy, aviation, and maritime operations.
• Bring binoculars if you have them!  Binoculars are excellent wide-field observing tools.  Feel free to spend time on the upper deck observing on your own while you are here.
• If you have a specific object you would like to see, let us know.  We will be able to tell you if it is visible from the observatory and within the sky conditions at the time of observing.

Public Observing Etiquette

• Telescopes are delicate and expensive.  When observing, look through the eyepiece, but do not grab or hang on to the telescope.
• Keep bright lights off. To ensure all observers get the most out of their observing experience, bright lights should be avoided to preserve night vision.  No flashlights or bright cellphone screens should be turned on while in the dome or near an observing area.
• Take your time when looking through a telescope.  Your eye may need a few moments to adjust to be able to see more subtle details.  Enjoy the view!
